JOHANN NEWS November 30th

Hello Families!

Tomorrow is our Winter Holiday Fair in the MPR.  Raffle tickets are on sale for the trees and there will be lots of fun crafts and things for the kids to do.

TOYS FOR TOTS
Toys for Tots starts on Monday.  If you are able to donate, please bring in a NEW, UNWRAPPED toy which can be dropped off in the bins near the morning car drop off sites.

CONFERENCES
If you had a conference scheduled on the Friday before our Thanksgiving break and would like to reschedule, please email me at meghanc@fsusd.org and we can figure out a good time to meet.

FIELD TRIPS
Our first field trip will be coming up at the end of January!  We will be going to Chabot Space and Science Center in Oakland on January 30th.  The only way we can get there is parent volunteer drivers, so if you are interested in joining us, please let me know.

Drivers will need to be fingerprinted and have completed the insurance insurance paperwork.  If you have filled all of this out to drive in years prior, you may just need a current proof of insurance to be cleared.  Please see Danni in the front office if you need any of the paperwork.

If you agree to be a parent driver, there are some grade level rules that we have.  Parents who join us must drive AND chaperone a group of kids.  Parents may not only drive their own student.  Please consider this when you volunteer.

MATH
We have started Unit 4 in Math which includes telling time and measurement.  Here is the link to the Unit 4 Homelinks if you are interested in discussing the math with your child.

ELA
We are finished learning about Habitats and will be starting a unit about Myths and Fables.  Our discussions will be around characters and lessons or morals.  We will continue to construct complete paragraphs with correct spelling and grammar.

Have a great weekend!

News, November 5th - 9th

Hello families,

Thank you for being patient with our crazy schedule the last few weeks!  We still have a weird schedule to come so make sure you mark your calendars.

Friday, November 9th - Minimum Day for conferences (release 11:55)
Monday, November 12th - NO SCHOOL
Tuesday, November 13th - Friday, November 16th are minimum days (release 11:55)
November 19th - 23rd, Thanksgiving Break

Conferences start on Friday!  Please make sure that you have signed up for a conference with your child using our SIGN-UP GENIUS LINK!

We also still need donations for our Holiday Auction Tree!  Use the SIGN-UP LINK to see how you can help out.  Donations need to be brought in by Thursday.

Curriculum Updates:
We are still working through our subtraction unit and building our number sense in math.  You can help your child at home by discussing strategies to count on or back.  Many students could also use and good old review of coins.  Just dump out a change purse or raid the piggy bank and talk about coins and how to count money.

We are continuing our animal habitat unit in ELA.  This is also one of our 2nd grade science standards, so we are also exploring adaptations and classification of animals.  There is daily practice to find key details in text and use them to support arguments and justify answers.  Students are also working on phonics and word families.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE READING EVERY NIGHT!  This is huge for our second graders who are developing as readers. It needs to be a positive and enjoyable experience, so if you are getting resistance, take some time to sit and read with your child instead of having them read independently.

The kids have been practicing their opinion writing.  We are now using topic sentences, supporting details, and a conclusion!  They have come so far in writing and have made tremendous growth.

Newsletter - October 8th, 2018

Hello Families,
Here are a few links for this week that might be helpful...

If you are interested in looking at what we are doing in math, I have attached the Unit 2 Homelinks for you to look at.  They are not exactly the same as what we do in class, but similar.  Feel free to visually check in with your child regarding some of the strategies you see for addition.

Our room parents have started planning the kids' Halloween party.  Please click on this Sign-Up Genius link to see how you can help!  Please note that we are not accepting extra treat bags from students.  We would appreciate it if we could just stick with the snacks on the sign up.

MAP scores will be sent home tomorrow, so keep a lookout and let me know if you have questions.

Newsletter, September 24th

Hello families,
Below is this week's newsletter.  I am also attaching the Math, Unit 2 Family Letter here so that you know what strategies we will be focusing on.  Let me know if you have any questions.

We have also started Book Bingo!  When kids finish a book that fits a box, they will summarize the story in a Flipgrid.  They can do this at school or at home.  The Bingo sheet is here and the link to the Flipgrid is here.  Feel free to help them at home. They will need their school email to login (s123456@fsusd.org).
